Earthworm Observation

Scientists in Ms. Martin's class worked very hard to complete an observation this past week. We worked on creating a detailed hypothesis and then observed a worm in several different settings: Choice between wet and dry surface, choice between darkness or light, and reaction to "danger" ( vinegar on a Q Tip) We loved watching the worms move and were able to infer that they were able to move so easily/freely because they do not have a back bone. The students are very excited to continue our animal unit!

  1. Alex really liked working with the worms because it was interesting to see what type of habitat the worm chose. Beau was surprised that the worm did not like the vinegar because it had a very strong smell which reminded him of his compost pile where he knows worms live. Chey enjoyed doing an experiment and realized that science can be a lot of fun and exciting. Chey compared doing the experiments to reading a mystery, because she likes to be surprised and not knowing what to expect.

  2. We have tons of earthworms living in our compost pile. I never knew they could have different reactions to dark vs. light or wet vs. dry. Thanks for sharing your findings. Ms. Martin really makes learning for you all.
